Crusaders Meet OVAC Foe Barnesville For First Time

The Steubenville Catholic Central Crusaders return home Saturday night for a first-time matchup with fellow OVAC member Barnesville at Harding Stadium. Both teams will be looking to rebound from setbacks last week. The Crusaders were shut out 41-0 by Wheeling Central Catholic, while the Shamrocks suffered a 41-13 loss to undefeated Shadyside.

Barnesville enters Saturday night’s game at 4-2 and is currently 11th in Ohio Division 5, Region 19. The ‘Rocks have beaten John Glenn (21-13), Meadowbrook (47-20), Buckeye Trail (39-7) and Shenandoah (48-18). Besides falling to Shadyside last week, their other loss came in week three against 5-1 Caldwell (24-21).

Luke Johnson is in his seventh year as head coach of the Shamrocks, and brings a veteran team to face the Crusaders. Despite losing 15 seniors from last year’s 5-5 squad, Barnesville returned 16 lettermen, including eight starters on offense and six on defense.

6-1, 195-pound senior Tyler Kurtz is the ‘Rocks field general, having shifted from receiver, where he caught 18 passes for 251 yards and three touchdowns in ’09. This season, he has thrown for over 500 yards and three touchdowns. Kurtz is a dual threat, as evidenced by his 69-yard scoring run vs. Shadyside.

145-pound senior wideout Tyler Moore and 6-5, 200-pound junior tight end/wideout Tyler Fitzpatrick have been Kurtz’s main targets through six games.

Tailback Preston Dornan, a 160-pound junior, headlines the Barnesville rushing attack, with over 600 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. He also set up a Barnesville score last week with a 74-yard kickoff return.

160-pound senior Brandyn Shaw has added 300 yards and four touchdowns on the ground, while Jesse Stoudt, a 190-pound junior, is the starting fullback.

Barnesville boasts a huge and experienced offensive line, with three players near or over the 300-pound mark. Senior tackles Adam Inherst and Jacob Houston weigh in at 325 and 295, respectively, while junior center Ian Wells also checks in at 325.

The guards are "small" in comparison. 265-pound junior Colin Hallstrom is a returning starter, as is three-year letterman Dustin Starr, a 195-pound senior.

Defensively, 6-5 senior Bryson Stephen lines up at one end, along with Fitzpatrick. Inherst and Houston are the starting tackles, backed by Hallstrom and Andrew Burkhead, another 325-pound senior.

Stoudt, Starr and 195-pound senior Kyle Morris see time at inside linebacker, while Kurtz and Shaw start on the outside.

Dornan patrols the secondary at safety, while Moore and 155-pound junior Zach Dornan are the corners.

Kurtz handles the placekicking and punting duties for Barnesville.

After moving the ball well in their previous two outings, the Crusaders suffered a frustrating night on Wheeling Island last Friday. Central turned the ball over three times, while only mustering 164 yards in total offense.

Freshman quarterback Brenton Colabella did manage to total 91 yards passing, hitting improving sophomore wideout Michael Carapellotti three times for 33 yards. Junior tight end Collin Valero and wideout Brannt Pieniazek both added two catches each, as did tailback Jon Emmerling.

Emmerling and fellow junior Jordan Piergallini paced the Crusader ground game.

Defensively, Catholic Central stood firm on a third-quarter goal-line stand, stopping Wheeling Central several times inside the Crusader five-yard line.

Kickoff for Saturday’s contest is set for 7:30 p.m.

Strong Second Half Leads Barnesville Over Crusaders

Quarterback Tyler Kurtz threw for a pair of touchdowns and ran for another two scores to lead Barnesville to a 27-9 win over Steubenville Catholic Central at Harding Stadium on Saturday night.

The 6-1, 195-pound senior connected on 12 of 17 aerials for 168 yards and carried 18 times for 116 yards in rallying the Shamrocks from a 9-7 deficit to their fifth win in seven games. The Crusaders dropped to 1-6 on the season.

Barnesville got on the board early, when Kurtz hit Kyle Fitzpatrick in the right flat and the big tight end broke free from the Crusader defense for a 60-yard touchdown just 1:58 into the game. David Brown’s PAT gave the ‘Rocks a 7-0 lead.

Central took possession on their own 26 after the kickoff. After garnering one first down, the Crusaders were forced to punt. Barnesville mishandled Alex Bednar’s boot and Central’s Jimmy Panella recovered the loose football at the Shamrock 39. Six plays later, Brenton Colabella hit Brannt Pieniazek in the end zone for a 12-yard touchdown with 4:17 left in the opening stanza. The Shamrocks blocked the conversion attempt, keeping their lead at 7-6.

On the first play after the kickoff, Kurtz completed a screen pass for a 14-yard gain but Pieniazek jarred the ball loose and defensive end Jordan Piergallini recovered for the Crusaders at the Barnesville 48-yard line.

The Crusaders were unable to take advantage of the turnover and, three plays later, punted the ball back to the Shamrocks. Pieniazek then broke up Kurtz’s third-down pass attempt, forcing a Barnseville punt.

Another three-and-out by the Crusaders gave Barnesville the pigskin back on their own 33-yard line. Six plays later, Kurtz broke loose for a 50-yard touchdown run that was negated because of a block in the back penalty. Moments later, Panella tipped a Kurtz pass into the hands of linebacker Jon Emmerling.

Central then mounted an 11-play 70-yard drive that led to a 25-yard field goal by Bednar that gave the Crusaders a 9-7 lead with just over four minutes left in the half.

Preston Dornon’s 54-yard return on the ensuing kickoff put Barnesville in scoring position at the Central 24. On first down, Kurtz took it around the left side on a keeper and beat the Crusader defense to the pylon for the Shamrocks’ second score of the night. Brown’s PAT gave Barnesville a 14-9 lead 3:38 before intermission.

Barnesville coach Luke Johnson made a personnel change at the half that paid dividends for the visitors. The large Shamrocks’ defensive line was having difficulty against the undersized, but scrappy Crusaders, so Johnson replaced his two 300-pound tackles with smaller, quicker linebackers and shifted Fitzpatrick from defensive end to linebacker.

The Crusaders did manage a 10-play drive to start the second half but were forced to punt, giving Barnesville possession on their own 16. The Shamrocks then mounted an impressive 15-play drive that was capped by a 5-yard scoring pass from Kurtz to Zach Dornon. Barnesville’s two-point conversion attempt was stopped short and the lead remained 20-9 with less than a minute to play in the third quarter.

After forcing a three-and-out by the Crusaders, Barnesville took over on their own 29 and launched a 13-play scoring drive that put the game away. Despite having a 42-yard touchdown run called back on the fourth play of the drive, the Shamrocks continued their march with Kurtz getting the score on a 10-yard draw up the middle. Brown’s extra point with 6:52 left provided the final points of the night.

Preston and Zach Dornon added 28 and 27 yards to Barnesville’s 197 yard rushing effort, with the latter leading the ‘Rocks receiving brigade with five catches for 48 yards. Tyler Moore added four catches for 38 yards while Fitzpatrick’s three receptions totaled 82 yards.

Crusader quarterback Brenton Colabella completed seven of 14 passes for 52 yards, including the touchdown to Pieniazek, who paced the Crusaders with three catches for 30 yards. Emmerling, Michael Carapellotti, Zach Herrington and Cody Lynskey all caught one pass each for Central.

Emmerling was the stalwart for the Crusader ground game, totaling 97 yards on 21 attempts. Although Lynskey only tallied 16 yards on five carries, his lead-blocking was instrumental in the success of the Central rushing attack. Freshman Khalil Jones added 25 yards on four carries.

Barnesville returns to action Friday night at Monroe Central, while the Crusaders will entertain Weirton (WV) Weir on Saturday night.
